2013 Kentucky Derby Has Makings of Historical Competition at Churchill Downs

As it seems like each year we hear that the Kentucky Derby has all the makings to become a race at Churchill Downs, one of the most sophisticated and historic annual events in sports. Here in 2013, we mean it. There is a great chance that history is made at the 2013 Kentucky Derby, and that form of traditional value will come in numerous ways on Saturday. For starters, Goldencents jockey Kevin Krigger has been presented with the chance to become the first African-American jockey to win the Kentucky Derby since 1902, as Al Roker observed on Twitter. Jimmy Winkfield was the last to accomplish it, when he won back-to-back races in 1902 and 1901, and the Press-Telegram tells us that the last time an African American even rode in the race was 1921. A Goldencents win would truly mark a historical and significant competition for Krigger and African Americans every where. The colt enters the derby with 5-1 possibilities, according to the Kentucky Derby's official site. Also competing for background is Rosie Napravnik, who will be struggling Mylute and is trying to get to be the first person to actually gain a Kentucky Derby function (h/t National Post). Offering more than 1,500 victories and being the only real female to get the Kentucky Oaks in 2012 (h/t Kentucky Derby), Napravnik is easily the most effective female jockey to ever get aboard a, and her colt features a genuine possibility of helping her make history on Saturday. Mylute has drawn 15-1 odds and is trained by Tom Amoss, who was simply inducted in to the Fair Grounds Hall of Fame in 1998 (via Kentucky Derby). The possibility of traditional happenings at the 2013 derby is unprecedented. The fact that a black man can become the first jockey to win in 111 years and that a lady can break the male-dominated barrier of horse racing all in one daya'on the same tracka'makes the 2013 Kentucky Derby an event that all sports fans should stay tuned to. And if that's inadequate for you, 50-year-old grandmother Tim Sullivan will undoubtedly be working Oxbow. While he'd maybe not function as oldest jockey to ever get a (54-year-old Willie Shoemaker already took care of the record), it's still an impressive feat and likely makes you feel like an inactive while scanning this.
