The other installment of the UFC's actuality show, The Ultimate Mma star, will land on He Sports 1 this September and feature both women and men competing for UFC legal agreements.
That bit of facts, we already knew. What we don't know is whether or not Ronda Rousey and Cat Zingano, the two coaches, will be able to find TUF out of the rut it is very much in and into next level of entertainment.
What does the "next level" really mean? Essentially, a show that becomes "must-watch television". I believed Jon Jones in addition to Chael Sonnen were travelling to create a new-found buzz for TUF, but even that receded once word got out there weren't really any fireworks taking between Sonnen and Jones within the taping of the demonstrate to. Even Uriah Hall didn't sustain excitement for the cast before the finale, and his loss so that you can Kelvin Gastelum doused his expectations rather.
Now TUF is going to experience one heck of a shot to recapture some of the buzz it once have during its first several seasons. Pitting two female coaches against each other and announcing the show should have male and female fighters is most likely something the UFC lands on as a last-ditch effort for any series before they refuse it altogether and construct an entirely different idea for a show.
Imagine if it was eventually announced that the two coaches were planning to be another matchup of UFC vets. Let's say Rashad Evans coaching against Dan Henderson. Although the two fighters are well-known and respected, it would have ended up a catastrophic decision for ones show because it might not have given the show to be able to become great again. And it was great at once, mostly due to the truth that we couldn't believe most people were getting actual MMA fights for the major cable channel; but which has been back in 2005.
Producers has to be more innovative than ever before nowadays to capture a great audience and keep them throughout a season. The first thing Let's hope they fix, which they probably won't, is having the show play on a three-hour delay on the west coast. Surely with technology we have today there are some way to have the show broadcast live coast-to-coast. On FX, and other networks which delay their shows over the west coast, the problem is trimming into normally scheduled programming that is a very important source of advertising revenue.
My gut feeling is that this upcoming season of TUF isn't travelling to be any more good than their previous projects. Rousey has captured the maximum amount of attention as any UFC fighter in the history of the marketing, but I don't necessarily believe she's brought in as much of a "new" audience of the fact that UFC and media would lead that you believe.
If you were to travel around and ask 10 people at random who Ronda Rousey is usually, I'd be very thrilled if more than 3 to 5 of them gave the precise answer. Then again, the same could probably be said for almost everyone else in the adventure. Heck, go ask 10 random people who Anderson Silva is might get the same, in any other case worse, response.
The UFC is going to do a good job getting people excited for TUF 18 and Fox will without a doubt put forth a fantastic effort in marketing their particular new channel. I just don't know what else is possible to give TUF a breath of fresh air. Moving to FX couldn't take action, promoting live fights every Friday fell flat and now mixing persons in the same show looks the next idea.
There are roads the UFC takes in their filming from TUF 18. If this season doesn't take TUF to the next level (and I don't believe it will), then avoid getting surprised if the UFC appearances to scrap TUF altogether.
