The Blues are generally regarded as having among the best youth set-ups in the place, with some validation, but a strange own purpose by Nortei Nortey demonstrated critical in pleasant climate in the North West. There was not a great deal involving the two factors but Chelsea had the best test of the initial half when leader Alex Davey dismissed a wonderful shot only wide of Jonny Sutherland's purpose. Two alternatives and a tactical change, that led to Jack Barmby playing within an different wing-back position, helped United find some beat. Immediately after the split, Byrne was given a one-on-one chance but Ben Killip pulled off a great stop. Joe Rothwell was through in similar situations but was denied by a defensive stop and the Reds were unfortunate not to score when Byrne expanded to satisfy an Andreas Pereira combination but found the basketball hit an article and roll to safety. The stress ultimately told as James Weir launched Byrne again and Nortey rushed right back but his backpass bobbled past Killip for a calamitous own target. After an opportunity was passed up by Byrne to put up the victory, Chelsea piled on the force towards the finish and went best to getting an with target was swerved off by a George Cole drive.
