Preakness 2013 Blog posts: Contenders Not Getting Sufficient Credit at Pimlico.

While Kentucky Derby winner Orb is widely-regarded as the favorite for the 2013 Preakness Blind levels, there are some respectable dark horses at Pimlico in Baltimore this coming year not getting enough credit inside oddsbooks.

That includes Father christmas Anita Derby winner Goldencents, co-owned simply by Louisville basketball coach Ron Pitino. Goldencents ranks fourth inside the early odds headed with the Preakness.

Here's a look into legitimate contenders who may not be getting enough credit at Pimlico this coming year, including Goldencents (odds by way of Bovada).

But a closer glance at the horse suggests he might not have been equipped for any classic distance of 1 1/4 kilometer after kilometer.

Goldencents' sire, Into Mischief, just raced seven furlongs in his three-year-old campaign. Goldecents' dam, Wonderful Works, only won in six furlongs during the girl career. The truth is, Goldencents was never bred as being a horse with elite strength.

That showed at a Derby. Goldecents was setting this pace with Palace Malice early, but began to drop back at about six furlongs. The result was an awkward finish.

Coming into that Derby, Goldencents had claimed three of his former four starts, including your Santa Anita Derby inside April. All of those wins were at 1 1/8 distance or shorter.

Govenor Charlie had received two of his initial three starts this year—including the Grade 3 Sunland Derby in March—before difficult withdraw from the Kentucky Derby by having a foot bruise.

Govenor Charlie may well not have faced elite competition with the Sunland Derby, but which shouldn't matter. Why? Because he set a stakes record for the race with a time of just one: 47. 54 in 1 1/8 mile after mile.

Also, the horse's pedigree can be exceptional. His sire, Night Lute, was a winner sprinter in 2007, collecting the Breeders' Cup Short in back-to-back outings. Your partner's dam, Silverbulletway, was a daughter of Hall of Famer Silverbulletday.

Itsmyluckyday is another form of transport that finished poorly at the Kentucky Derby, yet has the makeup and pedigree to achieve success at 1 3/16 mile after mile.

Itsmyluckyday's sire, Lawyer Ron, is best at 1 1/8 a long way throughout his career, as opposed to the classic distance of 1 1/4 miles. Itsmyluckyday's dam, Viva Are generally Slew, never won previous one mile.

Like Goldencents, Itsmyluckyday what food was in contention through six furlongs within the Derby, but fell backtrack the stretch. At your shorter distance, the mount should perform better.

And, don't forget, Itsmyluckyday had won a couple of three starts in 2013 headed into the Derby. There's a history of success there.

Itsmyluckyday is usually coming off a appealing workout at Monmouth Playground, according to The Sporting activities Network, via the Gambling Herald.

Trainer Ed Plesa Junior. said of the routine, via the report: "Perfect. He did just what I wanted. I seen him galloping out with: 59 and change (in five furlongs). I couldn't have asked for it to work out any better. "
