Preakness 2013: Why Low Payout with regard to Orb Makes Favorite a negative Bet.

After winning the Kentucky Derby around convincing fashion, Orb enters the Preakness Stakes for the overwhelming favorite. This isn't necessarily the best bet to earn on Saturday.

This means that a successful bet on top contender would provide a return of fewer than your original price. While Orb is good, they are not solid enough to help you justify this low agreed payment.

Despite winning five straight races, a lot needed go in the horse's opt to continue this streak. One major factor was that muddy track at Churchill Downs, where his experience paid off against some of the other competitors.

Other contenders like Goldencents together with Itsmyluckyday struggled in those conditions earlier inside month, but they really should be stronger at Pimlico. Newcomers Govenor Charlie and Departing should also be tough to beat.

However, the biggest issue that could hold Orb back from winning the second leg of the Triple Crown will be the post position. He will have to start from the No. 1 slot, which could prove to be a problem.

We saw at the Kentucky Derby what jockey Joel Rosario wanted about his mount. From the No. 16 post, he did not even try to get involved with good position at the beginning and was very pleasant sitting behind the wrap. It was not until the final turn that Rosario pushed the horse with the front.

Unfortunately, this strategy may not be possible at the Preakness. Starting near the rail will force Orb for any good start; otherwise, he could prove to be trapped inside with no room to move. This will especially be true while using the fast-starting Goldencents starting from No. 2.

Additionally, history is not really on Orb's side keying in the prestigious race, as per David Grening of On a daily basis Racing Forum:

The Kentucky Derby winner must overcome a long list of failed runners at that event. Based on the competition around him, it is definitely not too easy.

Orb is liable the most talented horse with the race, but that doesn't always lead to your win. There are a lot of factors at play which will prevent him from entering the winner's circle.

With this in mind, it would be a smarter proceed to place a bet on one of the many other contenders that could hopefully bring a much better payout.
